Hello and happy new year!? I know you’re not “supposed to” say that after a certain date, but it’s still a relatively new year and I sure do hope it’s a happy one for you. My year started a bit hectic, but things are starting to settle down and so am I. So I thought I’d pop in here and tell you about my new project: drawing plants!
My goal is to practice my illustration skills while showing how amazing nature is. I’m sharing the drawings on Instagram together with interesting tidbits about the plant in question. I started last week and am having a lot of fun with the plants, studying their shapes and reading up on all their amazing properties. I’m also really enjoying the drawing process, from the rough sketching to adding all the detail in shadows and light.
The form of this project combines many of my interests: nature, illustration, biology and nerdy facts and design as a way to explore and document the world around us. Most importantly, it goes back to the roots of Windward Made, which was (and is) always about my love for nature and making and living in a way that is most friendly to it. I have ideas for using these illustrations for future products, but for now it’s just practice and spreading the love of nature!
I started out thinking I would draw 3-4 times a week, but my drawings are more time-intensive than I expected – turns out I love adding lots of detail! So with a part-time job and small business I only have time for two of these drawings during the week. I hope to continue this project all through the year, and will work within a different theme each month. The theme for January is EVERGREENS, because looking for something green when all seems bare brings a lot of joy.
Have you started any projects this year?
